The scarf in my portrait signifies a stylish woman. A  proud professional Black woman. 'Shirley', a family friend, worked with the NHS for over 30 years, starting in the 1960's. She overcame beyond expectations; she was promoted to midwife.

Shirley thrived, she enjoyed life. She is a role model in my eyes. This scarf is exactly the same as one that Shirley wore.

Extract from Journaling

A remarkable woman indeed: My secret role model.
With a work life balance
With a story of her share of obstacles, insults and blatant racism. Triumph and Love.

Single mother, young and alone. In search of a brighter future in Britain.
Only to work unsociable hours to feed her child.
Her pride and ambition were always in her vision.
I listened to her stories attentively where she described her daily dose of abuse.
Racist name calling and insults from the patients in her care. They didn’t Care. You’re Black Don’t Touch Me!

Fast forward 4 decades and more.
See her shine
Travelling the world
In love too.

Feedback on Windrush NHS Stories journaling workshop and one to one mentoring with Jackie Bailey

Journalling has given me the opportunity to have an honest conversation from within. I was engaged in mindfulness, as my thoughts and feelings are flowing for that particular moment.

It’s like having an in depth relationship and journey with yourself.

It’s not about getting everything right. It’s really about connecting with little thoughts or events. I soon realised that they had an even more significant meaning or impact on my life when I seek to explore and expand further.
